We’ve been hearing a lot lately about uniform issues, in particular shoes/boots and even sock type. That being the case, let’s talk uniforms.
AFGE is concerned about the uniform requirements of the TSO’s. Some potential items we may be able to negotiate in the contract are the following:
- Permission to wear TSA jackets, shorts, sunglasses, and certain brands of shoes based on employee’s preference
- Permission to wear all current TSA garments, including jumpsuits, in public areas of the airports.
- Improve the quality of the uniforms
- Increase the uniform allowance
- Permit a greater diversity of personal appearance, e.g. long hair, long fingernails, earrings, etc.)
Please comment below with specific examples of problems you have had with your TSA uniform.
As always, please don’t post any SSI and remember that this blog is public so what you post is for all to see.

all officers need EMT/Tactical style pants, exp for baggage officers. also at my airport we are not allowed to wear the jumpsuit at all due to our FSD. The most complaints i get from Duel Function Officers(both baggage and checkpoint) is that the pants that we have do not go with the function of our job. Baggage personnel need heavy duty type of pants, that we are able to work and breath in such as cargo emt style
Since we are now union (AFGE) I would like our uniforms to be Union Made!! here in the good ol’ USA. Thank you, TSO Yates-SMF
one our STSO put on the idea factory to have more choice in footwear like ICE (3 PAGES WORTH OF SHOES). we all have to say the shoes suck for TSA, i also agree with AOA that baggage wear is horriable and not made for the job at hand.
the pants needs to be more tactical in nature, do to the new patdowns i and most of my officers find that we are on our knees to check feet any our pants are wearing thin in those area. Also we need to have american made manufacturing jobs made america in pass time for tsa to contribute to economy. Plus we should have more money in allowance so we can get more uniform and got to get rid of the material we get now
I agree with a lot of the uniform policies because if given to much freedom a lot of the officers don’t understand what is and isn’t appropriate for work, so therefore they need guidelines. As for the uniform quality, I feel the current pants are horrible for baggage. The constant rubbing of luggage on the legs is murder for the pants. And as for shoes yes we should have more choices. I constantly end up having to pay for them out of my pocket because what they have don’t work for me and are not comfortable for a baggage officer. I prefer boots and they don’t provide none.
I work in Bags in south Fla why cant we be like other agencies and get teeshirts to wear
At DFW, the managers are saying Bates brand boots are not acceptable because the consider the mesh as an adornment. We should be able to wear any shoe or boot we want as long as it is all black and can maintain a shine
yea we heard you guys were being written up left to right, day by day for shoes that werent all leather,,,mia tso
Because of medical problems, it was discussed at the local level that I could wear all black sport walking type shoe instead on the hard body shoes, which do not fit well, especially in the full standing type of work that TSOs perform
VF Solutions needs to add more options when it comes to footwear. That includes the shoes and socks. I live in PHX and the thick socks they offer are too warm for this environment for most of the year. The baggage screening officers wear the TSA issued shorts but VFS doesn’t offer any socks to go along with the short pants. VF needs to offer ankle length black socks. They also need to offer some type of work shoe, that is not a dress shoe, for working in the baggage screening areas.
I think TSA should give us an allotment to buy our own footwear, especially since there are so many differences in what footwear works for each individual.
I think we should get a TSA/AFGE duffel bag. To carry uniforms, lunches, shoes, reading material, etc. It doesn’t have to be a huge duffel bag.
I want uniforms made in the US
I want a larger uniform allowance
I want females to be able to wear their hair the way they want
I want to wear shorts and polo’s to be worn in baggage
I want to wear blue T-shirts
I want EVERYTHING CLEARLY spelled out so nothing is left to someone else idea of what it should br
This issue of uniforms is a subject of bargaining and its critical that we understand and be able to justify the concerns we have regarding uniforms. For those activist and local union officers, it is imperative that you attend the Bargaining Conference on October 17, 18 and 19 in Orlando FL. It will be an exciting time and opportunity to impact what will be discussed at the bargaining table! These considerations are vital for a more effective and efficient agency! For those who can make it – see y’all there!!!
Quality could be better, greater selections would be nice, You should be permitted to wear any footwear a Law Enforcement are allowed to wear. And local policies on uniforms and any other subject should be grievable and appealed to a national policy review board for consideration.
My issue with uniforms is the Distribution of Uniforms. Currently TSO’s order via VF Solutions and then they go pick them up at logistics. The problem with that is that logistics is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm, and it makes it impossible for TSO’s on the night shift to pick up during those hours.
We need to be able to wear some sort of approved union member insignia or pin to show that TSO’s, BDO’s and STI’s are union PROUD.
My problem with the uniforms are that they of very poor quality I have been trying to get pants that fit for over two years and the sizes are never the same everytime I order them. Thought I would give the new wool blend a try same thing wrong size and they are very thin material so I am dowm to one pair of pants and haven no money left do to the high cost of the new wool blend. We need better quality and more funds!
Telling the TSOs what part of the uiniform they can and cannot wear according to the season e.g. sweaters, long sleeves, short sleeves, turtle necks.
Can i wear a personal jacket that covers my uniform on breaks ?
